Jew Who Tokes: An Instagram Account Dedicated to MOTs Who Love Cannabis

Who could have suspected that a Brown University Judaic Studies major turned corporate lawyer and design curator would eventually launch an Instagram account dedicated to Jews who love cannabis and work in the cannabis industry?

Over the past five years I have researched the changing aesthetics of the cannabis industry for my series Rebranding Pot. I eventually realized that what fascinated me the most was not the beautiful packaging and innovative branding I was discovering — it was the number of members of my tribe all over the world who openly enjoy cannabis, have been involved in the fight for its legalization and are engaged in this new industry.

I decided to create an account that would explore this potential connection between Jews and weed: @JewWhoTokes. I present no theories, answers or generalizations… but was Nixon on to something?

“You know, it’s a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana are Jewish. What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob? What is the matter with them? I suppose it is because most of them are psychiatrists.” — Richard Nixon

Lily Tomlin as Frankie Bergstein in “Grace & Frankie,” Andy Cohen, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson in “Broad City,” Warren Bobrow (cannabis cocktail expert), Chelsea Handler, and co-founders of cannabis brand Houseplant, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The series features activists…

…entrepreneurs,

… medical users,

…industry experts, and

…pop culture.

As the series unfolds, I want to explore the issue of white privilege, expand my representation of non-Ashkenazi and non-American Jews, and increase my coverage of Jews of color and LGBTQIA members of the tribe.

If you got the munchies, what Jewish food would you devour?
